How the required run rate is calculated

Required Run Rate = Runs Still Needed ÷ Overs Remaining

The required run rate, usually shortened to RRR, is the average number of runs per over the batting side must score across the balls that are left in order to pass the target. It is the single most-quoted number on any scoreboard during a chase, and it is a plain division: the runs still needed divided by the overs still available.

The part most calculators get wrong is the overs. Cricket writes overs in a base-six notation, so 9.4 means nine completed overs and four balls, which is 58 balls, not 9.4 overs. Dividing by 9.4 as a decimal gives an RRR that is quietly wrong all afternoon. This calculator converts your entry to balls first, then works in balls throughout, which is also why the balls-remaining figure it reports always matches the broadcast graphic.

Reading RRR properly in a T20

An RRR is only meaningful alongside the wickets in hand and the balls left. Eight an over with nine wickets standing and fifteen overs to go is routine in modern T20 cricket. The same eight an over with two wickets left and three overs to go is a different match entirely, because the batting side no longer has the freedom to lose anybody. That is why this tool reports the required rate, the wickets remaining and the balls remaining side by side rather than in isolation, and why the pressure index blends all three.

As a rough guide in twenty-over cricket, anything under six an over is comfortable, six to eight is the normal working range, eight to ten asks for genuine acceleration, ten to twelve needs sustained boundary hitting, and beyond twelve the chase depends on a specific batter having an exceptional over or two. These bands are conventions used by commentators, not fixed laws — ground size, pitch, dew and the quality of the bowling attack all move them.

Why the boundary planner helps

Telling a viewer that the rate is 13.20 conveys less than telling them the side needs a little over two boundaries an over. The boundary planner converts the outstanding runs into the combinations that would produce them: sixes only, fours only, a mixed split, and boundaries interleaved with singles. It is straightforward arithmetic, but it makes the size of the task legible in a way a two-decimal number does not.

What this tool deliberately does not do

It does not print a winning percentage. A credible win probability needs a large, current database of comparable match situations along with venue and matchup adjustments, and any number produced without that would be invented. The pressure index here is a transparent weighted score of the three inputs you typed, disclosed as such, and nothing more. It also does not apply the DLS method for rain interruptions, because DLS depends on official resource tables rather than a formula that can be approximated honestly. For a reduced-overs match, enter the revised overs and target once the officials publish them.

Wides, no-balls and free hits extend an over beyond six balls. Every figure here assumes six legal deliveries per over, so during an over with extras the live balls-remaining count on your screen is the one to trust.

What does 9.4 overs mean when I enter it?

Nine completed overs plus four balls, which is 58 balls bowled. Only the digits 0 to 5 are valid after the decimal point, since an over has six balls.

What is the difference between required run rate and current run rate?

Current run rate is how fast the side has scored so far — runs divided by overs faced. Required run rate is how fast it must score from here. When the current rate is above the required rate the chase is ahead of par; when the required rate pulls away from the current rate, the batting side is falling behind. The gap between the two is shown as RRR minus CRR.

Can the required run rate be used for the team batting first?

Not directly, because there is no target yet. Use the current run rate calculator to project where an innings is heading, then use this tool once a target exists.

Is this the same as net run rate?

No. Required run rate is a within-match chase figure. Net run rate is a tournament tiebreaker comparing a team's scoring rate against the rate it concedes across a whole competition — that one is handled by the net run rate calculator.

Does the calculator handle a rain-reduced target?

It handles the revised numbers, not the revision itself. Once the officials announce the new target and the new number of overs, enter both and every figure recalculates correctly.
