What is Net Run Rate (NRR)?
Net Run Rate = (Total Runs Scored ÷ Total Overs Faced) − (Total Runs Conceded ÷ Total Overs Bowled)
NRR is the tiebreaker used in cricket tournaments when two or more teams finish with the same number of points. A positive NRR means your team scores faster than it concedes. A negative NRR means the opposite.
IPL example: If Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals both have 14 points after the league stage, the team with the higher NRR qualifies for the playoffs. A difference of even +0.05 can be the difference between qualifying and going home — which is why fans obsessively track NRR in the final week of the IPL.
Important rule: If a team is all out before their overs are complete, the full allocated overs (not the overs actually bowled) are used in the NRR calculation. This is why winning with overs to spare is better for NRR than winning off the last ball.
