How age is calculated — and why simple subtraction fails
Your age looks like it should be a quick subtraction of years, but doing it that way is often wrong by up to a year. Getting it exact matters when a form, an exam, or an eligibility rule counts your age down to the day.
Why you can't just subtract the years
Two things break naive subtraction. First, months have different lengths — 28, 29, 30, or 31 days — so "3 months" isn't a fixed number of days. Second, leap years add a 29th of February every four years, shifting day counts. An accurate age has to compare the day, month, and year separately and "borrow" when the current date is earlier in the month than your birth date — exactly what this calculator does for you.
15 August 2000, checked on 4 August 2026, is 25 years, 11 months, and 20 days old — not 26. Because the 4th is before the 15th, the calculator borrows a month (and the right number of days for July) to get the exact remainder.What this calculator gives you

How does the calculator handle leap years?
It counts the actual number of days in each month and year between the two dates, including the 29th of February in leap years, so the day count is exact rather than an approximation.
Can I find my age on a past or future date?
Yes. Set the target date to any date you like — a past cut-off or a future milestone — and the calculator gives your exact age as on that date.
Why does my age differ between calculators?
Usually because of how the birth day is counted or how months are rounded. A day-level calculation that borrows months correctly, like this one, gives the precise years-months-days figure that official forms expect.
Does the calculation include the day I was born?
Age is measured as complete time elapsed since birth, so your birth day is the starting point and today counts toward the days lived. On a birthday, the years figure increases by one and the months and days reset to zero.
How do I calculate age for a government exam?
