What is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that can be scanned by any smartphone camera to instantly open a URL, save a contact, connect to WiFi, send a WhatsApp message, and more.

Common uses: Restaurant menus, business cards, product packaging, event tickets, payment UPI links, Wi-Fi sharing at home or office, and sharing contact details instantly.

Error correction determines how much of the QR code can be damaged or covered and still be readable. Higher error correction means the QR code is more reliable but holds slightly less data. Medium (15%) is recommended for most uses.

QR codes explained — and how to use them safely

A QR code is just a picture that holds text. When a phone camera reads the pattern, it decodes that text and acts on it — opening a link, joining a WiFi network, or saving a contact. Because it removes typing, it's become the quickest way to move information from a screen or a poster into someone's phone.

What you can put in a QR code here

This generator builds codes for the things people actually share:

  • Website link — send anyone straight to a page, product, or form.
  • Plain text — a note, a code, or instructions.
  • Email, phone, or SMS — a code that starts a message or a call to a set number.
  • WhatsApp — open a chat to your number, optionally with a pre-filled message.
  • WiFi login — guests join your network by scanning, without you reading out the password.
  • Contact card — share your name and number so it saves in one tap.

Why a QR code still scans when it's damaged or has a logo

QR codes have built-in error correction, which stores the data with redundancy so the code still reads even if part of it is dirty, torn, or covered. There are four levels — from roughly 7% recovery at the lowest to about 30% at the highest. Higher correction is what lets brands drop a logo in the middle of a code without breaking it; the trade-off is a denser pattern.

Static vs dynamic codes

This tool makes static QR codes: the data is baked directly into the pattern, so the code is free, permanent, and works forever with no third party involved. A dynamic code instead stores a short link you can edit or track later — useful for marketing analytics, but it depends on a paid service and keeps working only as long as that service does. For a WiFi password, a menu link, or a business card, static is exactly what you want.

Where QR codes are everywhere in India

From UPI payments and restaurant menus to product packaging, event check-ins, and shop counters, QR has become part of daily life. That ubiquity is also why safety matters.

Staying safe when you scan

Treat an unknown QR code like an unknown link. A code can point anywhere, so scammers stick fake codes over real ones — on parking meters, payment counters, or posters. Two rules protect you: check the preview your phone shows before opening a link, and for payments remember that scanning a code is how you send money, never receive it — if anyone sends you a QR "to get a refund or prize," it's a scam. When paying, always confirm the payee's name matches before approving.

Frequently asked questions

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes, like the ones made here, never expire because the data is stored in the pattern itself. Only dynamic codes that rely on a third-party redirect can stop working if that service is discontinued.

Can I put a QR code on a printed poster or card?

Yes. Download the code as an image and print it at a clear size with some blank margin around it. The built-in error correction keeps it scannable even with minor print smudging.

Is it safe to scan any QR code?

Not automatically. A code can link anywhere, so preview the destination before opening it, and be wary of codes stuck over existing ones or sent by strangers, especially anything involving payment.

How does a WiFi QR code work?

It encodes your network name, password, and security type as text. When a guest scans it, their phone offers to join the network directly, so you never have to read out the password.

Is my data uploaded when I create a code?

No. The QR code is generated in your browser from what you type, so the information stays on your device and isn't sent to any server.
